| Here is a new math problem for you to solve. After you’ve come up with a solution watch Ishant’s mathcast video and see if you agree with his solution. Is it correct? Is it efficient? Did you approach the problem differently, but arrive at the same solution? Send us your thoughts and solutions!
“TRACKING TIME” Ramik was asked how he spends his time during the week, starting from the time he gets home from school at 3:00 p.m. until he goes to bed at 10:00 p.m. He listed the following weekly after-school activities:
- homework, studying, or reading
- spending time with friends
- eating
- chores
- music lessons
- soccer
He observed that:
- He spends 50% of his time doing homework, studying, or reading.
- He spends as much time doing chores as he does eating.
- The amount of time he spends on music lessons equals 50% of the time he devotes to soccer each week.
- Soccer practices are scheduled twice a week for 2 hours each time.
- Each week, the amount of time he spends eating and doing chores combined equals the amount of time he spends on soccer.
- The rest of his free time is spent with friends.
|
On average, how much time daily, in hours and minutes, does Ramik spend on each activity? For next week, if he reduces the amount of time he spends with friends by 50%, will he have enough time to fit in another soccer practice without taking any time from any other activities?

Filling Beauty’s Seats
Try to solve this problem, then watch Abhay’s mathcast to see if you agree with his solution. Do you think his solution is accurate and efficient?
Tickets to Fairview Elementary School’s production of Beauty and the Beast went on sale this week. The school theater has 24 rows of 16 seats each.
- 1/3 of all the seats have been sold to students for $3 each.
- 1/4 of them have been sold to adults for $5 each.
- 1/6 of them were given to the teachers.
- If everyone who already has a ticket goes to the show, what fraction of the seats in the theater will be filled?
- How many seats are still available?
Extra: How much money has been collected so far? If all the remaining seats are sold to students, how much money will be raised altogether? (Problem from Drexel’s MathForum)
