Filling Beauty’s Seats
Try to solve this problem, then watch Abhay’s mathcast to see if you agree with his solution. Do you think his solution is accurate and efficient?
Tickets to Fairview Elementary School’s production of Beauty and the Beast went on sale this week. The school theater has 24 rows of 16 seats each.
- 1/3 of all the seats have been sold to students for $3 each.
- 1/4 of them have been sold to adults for $5 each.
- 1/6 of them were given to the teachers.
- If everyone who already has a ticket goes to the show, what fraction of the seats in the theater will be filled?
- How many seats are still available?
Extra: How much money has been collected so far? If all the remaining seats are sold to students, how much money will be raised altogether? (Problem from Drexel’s MathForum)

Well explained Abhay, great job!
Mr Woolard, I believe your approach to teaching is really wonderful and helps the students in getting their fundamentals correct!
Keep it up!
